A Message from the Fire Chief

The City of Cocoa Beach has been operating a Fire Department and servicing the community since 1949. The Department prides iteself on providing high-quality fire prevention, suppression, and emergency medical services. The Department has a staff of 31 employees: 27 are Florida State-certified Paramedics, 11 are Fire Inspector certified by the State Fire Marshal Office. Along with the Staff, I am extemely proud to serve the community. Together, we can accomplish the basic mission of Life Safety, Incident Stabilization, and Property Conservation.

Population and Response area

The City of Cocoa Beach Fire Department (CBFD) serves approximately 3.5 square miles of residential and commercial area, as well as providing basic fire protection for the "Thousand Islands," the area adjacent to Cocoa Beach, in the Banana River. The 3.5 square miles of land mass is unique in shape in that it is a barrier island approximately 6.5 miles in length and approximately 1.7 miles wide at it widest point. The CBFD serves a population of approximately 12,800 residents, as well as the influx of tourists and visitors which causes the population to rise to an average of 30,000 people a day during the tourist season.

Stations and Staffing

The Fire Department operates two stations, staffed with three shifts of eight personnel. Click here for Organizational Chart. Our shift personnel work 24-hour shifts to then have the next 48 hours off. Our administrative staff works Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. All personnel are on call in the event of serious fire, emergency or severe weather situation.  

Fire Station 1 is located at 25 South Orlando Avenue across the street from City Hall. Fire Department administrative offices are located at Fire Station 1.
Fire Station 2 is located at 151 West Volusia Lane, one block north of the 520 Causeway.

Our fire equipment includes: a 2004 Pierce dash 2000 GPM fire Engine, a 2002 Pierce dash 2000 GPM Fire Engine, a 1992 Pierce 75' Pierce Ladder Truck with a 1500GPM pump, one 1988 E-One Engine with 1250 GPM pump and a 1996 EVI Rescue Vehicle.

Emergency Services Supplied

The Cocoa Beach Fire Department is a modern organization with an Insurance Services Organization (ISO) rating of Class 4 providing fire suppression, rescue and Advanced Life Support (ALS) services. The ALS program was implemented in January 1999.

Emergency Management

The Fire Chief serves as Emergency Manager for the City. This includes planning for a variety of potential emergencies and disasters. The City works closely with the Brevard County Office of Emergency Management to coordinate with State and Federal requirements. The Special Needs Registry is maintained by Brevard County, call to pre-register (321) 637-6670.

Fire Prevention

Fire Prevention is provided by the Deputy Chief/Fire Marshal, the Assistant Fire Marshal and currently nine shift personnel who hold Inspector Certificates. The Deputy Chief/Fire Marshal and Assistant Fire Marshal also serve as a members of the City's Development Review Committee, which is responsible for reviewing plans of  proposed new construction.

Existing building inspections are conducted by the Assistant Fire Marshal and shift personnel as well as the Deputy Chief/Fire Marshal. Pre-fire plans are drawn of commercial and multi-family occupancies and are incorporated into response procedures.

Current Inspection and Permit Fee schedules are included in Chapter 9 of the Cocoa Beach City Code.

Safety programs on a variety of subjects, including fire prevention, high-rise evacuation, hurricane safety and others are available through the Fire Marshal's Office.

Citizen's Academy

The Fire Department contributes to and participates in the Cocoa Beach Citizen's Academy offering several modules in the program to enhance the community awareness of our activities and efforts.  

Blood Pressure Screening

Monday is blood pressure screening day. Community volunteers are available for anyone who stops by for a BP screening at the Main Fire Station. Winter hours (November thru March ) are 9AM - 12PM and 1PM - 4PM. Summer hours (April - October) are 9AM - 12PM. Please be sure to express thanks to the volunteers who generously give their time!

Employment

Applications for Firefighter openings are accepted from anyone holding State of Florida Minimum Standards for Firefighters AND a State of Florida Paramedic License. All hiring procedures are the responsibility of the City of Cocoa Beach Personnel Department.

Frequently Asked Questions

Outdoor burning of rubbish, trash or debris is prohibited within the City .

The fire department is not licensed to fill extinguishers, but a list of companies is found in the yellow pages under "fire extinguishers."

If this is a battery powered detector, the chirping typically indicates a weak battery. Try replacing the battery, if that does not solve the problem replace the detector.

This may be caused by dust or a small insect in the sensing part of the detector. Try vacuuming the outside of the detector to remove the problem and replace if there is no improvement.
