Resurfacing to Begin on State Road A1A in Cocoa Beach
Starting soon, the Florida Department of Transportation will begin a roadway construction project to repair a nearly 7-mile section of State Road (SR) A1A in Cocoa Beach. The $5.4 million improvement project is expected to last about a year. It is the second large resurfacing project currently underway along the SR A1A corridor in Brevard County.
Awarded to Masci General Contractors Inc., the project includes the milling and resurfacing of northbound SR A1A (North Atlantic Avenue) from just south of Sheri Lee Lane/36th St. (just north of Patrick Air Force Base housing) to just north of Sunflower Street, and of southbound Orlando Avenue from north of Sunflower Street to just north of South 21st Street.
Seventeen “bulb-out” features are planned for the downtown Cocoa Beach area. In addition to providing a traffic calming effect, these enhanced curb features near parking areas may be utilized for future landscaping.
Throughout the project, new sidewalk construction will fill in gaps between existing sidewalks to create sidewalk continuity, with the exception of the right of way between South 7th Street and South 6th Street on the east side of Orlando Avenue. Improvements also include drainage enhancements, minor traffic signal upgrades, and crosswalks and side street curbs constructed to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
The construction schedule may be affected by weather or other unforeseen conditions. Daytime and nighttime lane closures are expected.
