COMMENTS: We live in Palm beach County and already planned and paid for our hotel reservations. We are a bit disappointed to read about the 4th of July cancellations. Is there anywhere else we can take the family to see fireworks without travelling too far? Thanks for the help.

COMMENTS: (6/27/2008) We are leaving Monday for a vacation and house hunting trip to Cocoa Beach. We are very excited, but also disappointed as we just found out three hours ago that the fireworks are not happening. We have family members from 13 - 23; do you know any areas close by that will be hosting fireworks displays? We would very much appreciate help with this part of our holiday. Thank you and we look forward to maybe living in your community soon! : )

EDITOR'S REPLY: The City of Cocoa hosts a fireworks display from its riverside park at the foot of State Road 520 and the river's edge. Due to turtle nesting regulations, Cocoa Beach is unable to shoot fireworks from the beach and the barge based show was cancelled by the sponsor (a local business) after increasing problems and costs with having a barge available for an offshore launching platform. The Cocoa riverside show is an excellent display.

COMMENTS: (6/26/2008) I heard last night that the City commissioner of Cocoa Beach has cancelled the 4th of July fireworks display. I can not beleive that they would do something like this the week before the holiday weekend. What about all the people that have booked their weekend at the beach just to see the fireworks display and now can not cancel becasue they will be charged a fee?WHY??? When local business had offered to contribute to the cost? Sounds like somebody has dropped the ball. Looks like next year all the holtels will have vacancies on this weekend.

EDITOR'S RESPONSE: The cancellation of the Cocoa Beach 2008 Fireworks show was first announced in December 2007 at the City Commission meeting and an article was printed in Florida Today at that time. Contrary to what has been reported in the media, no other businesses stepped forward.

The business sponsor, who had generously provided funding in past years, decided to discontinue participation because of problems in getting a barge reserved for a one day event. Barge owners will not commit to short term rentals and pyrotechnic professionals now refuse to take on responsibility for renting a barge. Last year the barge firm pulled out 5 days before the event and the event was up in the air until an acceptable barge was found at the last minute in Jacksonville. The cost to have a tug go up and bring back the barge resulted in financial loss to the pyro firm. The uncertainty as to barge availability is the reason the sponsors re-considered financial support for the show.

COMMENTS: (5/31/2008) I am aware that camping is illegal at Cocoa beach, but are there ANY beaches in Fl that allow tent camping?

EDITOR'S RESPONSE: Beach camping is prohibited in Brevard County. There are a number of State parks having amenities (restrooms, barbeque grills, security, etc.) for campers - Jetty Park in Cape Canaveral and Sebastian Inlet Park in the far south end of the County.
