What is nonpoint source pollution? Nonpoint source (NPS) pollution, unlike pollution from point sources such as sewage treatment plants and industrial facilities, comes from many diffuse sources. As stormwater runoff moves over our urban landscape, it picks up and carries wastes such as grease and oils from roadways, and nutrients and pesticides from our lawns. These pollutants are deposited into local waterways, making NPS pollution the leading cause of of water quality impairment in the US. |
How do grass clippings pollute our waters? Grass clippings are organic
matter. When they get wet, they rot, releasing nitrogen and
phosphorous into the water. This release triggers algae in the water
to "bloom" or grow at a great rate. As it grows, it also dies off.
this "die off" creates a bacteria bloom (because the bacteria has been
eating the dying algae,) which uses up the oxygen in the water. Low
oxygen waters cannot support aquatic or marine life, leading to "dead
zone." The dead algae and bacteria becomes a blanket of "muck," lining the
bottom and suffocating life in our waterways. |
