The Florida
Department of Law Enforcement Computer Crime Center is warning citizens to be
careful of "phishing" e-mail scams that attempt to steal bank information and
raid a person's bank account.
Nearly 2 million Americans have had their checking accounts broken into in the past 12 months. This is consistent with the rise in phishing e-mails that attempt to steal consumer's information and passwords by imitating e-mails from legitimate financial institutions. These fraudulent messages are designed to trick the recipients into disclosing personal information authentication data such as account usernames, passwords, credit card numbers, social security numbers, and home addresses. These scams look very convincing and can fool very smart people into giving out critical personal information. To see examples of some previous phishing scams go to www.antiphishing.org. In 2003, Floridians reported a combined loss of $25 million to online fraud, according to the Federal Trade Commission. Citizens can learn more about computer crimes, common complaints, viruses, and how to report a computer crime at www.fdle.state.fl.us/Fc3. More information on phishing is available at www.secureflorida.org. |

News Release - Deputies will set up
a comprehensive roadside safety checkpoint in Cocoa Beach on Friday night
- April 9 as part of the Checkpoint Brevard program. The checkpoint will be
set up from 10 p.m. Friday until 3 a.m. Saturday at 2067 N. Atlantic Avenue
in Cocoa Beach. Assisted by police officers from various Brevard County
police departments, deputies will check vehicles for safety defects and will
focus on identifying motorists who are driving under the influence. The
program's goal is to lower the incidence of alcohol-related fatalities and
crashes by supplementing rigorous DUI enforcement with highly visible,
well-publicized checkpoints. Since implementing the Checkpoint Brevard
program, Brevard County has seen a dramatic drop in alcohol-related traffic
fatalities. Where Brevard exceeded the state average in alcohol-related
traffic deaths in 1999, it fell well below the state average in 2002.
Statewide in 2002, alcohol was a factor in 32 percent of all traffic deaths.
In Brevard, however, alcohol was a factor in 30 percent of all traffic
fatalities. In 2002, 35 people lost their lives in alcohol-related crashes
on Brevard County roads. Journalists are welcome to accompany the deputies
manning the checkpoint as well as those assigned to DUI patrols. To make
arrangements, contact Sgt. Walt Petty at 321-454-7067. |
