COCOA BEACH PUBLIC LIBRARY CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY A proclamation honoring the Cocoa Beach Public Library for 50 years of service to the community was presented by Mayor Skip Beeler to Library Director Ray Dickinson at the January 6 Cocoa Beach City Commission meeting. The proclamation designates 2005 as “Cocoa Beach Public Library Year.” ***The library opened on May 21, 1955 in one room of the old City Hall with a collection of barely 500 books. The population of Cocoa Beach at the time was only 798. Ruby Gammage, a teacher and educator, is credited with being the driving force behind starting the library.*** Over the years the library has continued to grow with the community and has moved three times. The 23,500 square foot current library opened at 550 N. Brevard Avenue on September 27, 1998. The book collection is now over 100,000 volumes and more than 20,000 people visit the library each month. Dickinson, who has been director of the facility for 20 years, said the library is planning another expansion project. “Plans call for a 2,000 square foot addition on the north side of the building that will add conference rooms and study rooms,” he said. The project is expected to begin within a year. |
