  John Hussey will discuss his 600 mile pilgrimage beginning in France and
continuing through to the west coast of Spain. On his spiritual quest, Hussey walked in the footsteps of St. Francis of Assisi and Emperor Charlemagne, staying in refugios (boarding houses) built in the 9th century.

Local artist Bette Greene will teach a 5 week figure sketching course on
Fridays at 2:00 PM from May 12 through June 9 at Cocoa Beach Public Library. Cost for
the course is $35.00. Please sign up at the Circulation Desk and pick up a
materials list.

Bette Greene is a versatile artist who does impressionist works in oil, as
well as figure sketching. She has won many local, as well as far reaching
awards and has taught art locally.

Her displays extend from local – Our Savior’s School in Cocoa Beach, to
Frasier Park, California. Bette also studied with several well known local
artists such as Narcissa Perrin, Mona Jordan and Bill Schultz.

The Citizens' Action Committee of Cocoa Beach will host a presentation by
Michael Myjac, who is Chairman of SAVE BREVARD, which is a Brevard
county-wide coalition to promote a quality of life approach to growth
management in the county.

Refreshments will be served before the presentation which begins at 10:00
AM. Mr. Mjack will answer questions after his presentation.

Oh, Did I Forget to Mention Memory? With Mary Kay Kantz, Wednesday, May 17th
at 1:00 PM. Part of the Intelligent Aging Series. Many older people fear
memory decline. But this is not as prevalent a problem as we might think. We
need to distinguish memory problems caused by natural slowing functions vs.
those caused by problems requiring medical treatment.

  “First Annual Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Contest 1967 “– the DVD,
Monday, May 22nd at 6:30 PM. Thanks to a gift from the family of the late,
great surfer Bruce Valluzzi, Jim Lasley of Lone Pine Productions was able to
save from deterioration a 40 year old 16mm film print of the very first
professional surfing contest ever held on the north shore of Hawaii.
Featuring Corky Carroll, Greg Noll, Paul Stroud and other giants of surfing.
Copies of the DVD will be available for purchase.

WATERCOLOR CLASSES WITH LINDA NEAL
AT COCOA BEACH PUBLIC LIBRARY
Melbourne artist Linda Neal will teach 2 sessions of watercolor classes, suitable for beginning and intermediate students, at Cocoa Beach Public Library. Cost is $40.00 for each 4 week session. Session 1 will be held
Tuesday mornings from 9:00 AM to noon on May 31, June 7, 14 and 21. Session 2 will also be held on Tuesday mornings July 12, 19, 26 and August 2. To register, call the instructor at 544-8888.
Neal is the owner/artist of Cottage Art & Frame in Melbourne. A versatile artist, she is also noted for her work with silhouettes, scherenschnitte (paper cutting), pastels and charcoal. She designed the official poster for
the popular ArtWorks Festival held in Melbourne in 2004.

Ikebana (Japanese Flower Arranging) with Betty Allison on Wednesdays, May
31st – June 28th at 1:00 PM. Cost for the 5 week session is $40.00, which
includes fresh flowers. Needle point holders will be available for $7.00, as
will plastic oriental containers for $4.00. To register, please call Betty

Ongoing Programs  

Easy Hatha Yoga with Emily Hain, Tuesdays at 2:00 PM through May 23rd. Cost
is $5.00 Wear comfortable clothing and bring a towel or a mat.

T’ai Chi Chu’an with John Lang, AP, Wednesdays at 9:00 AM through May 24.
Cost is $5.00per session. Wear flat soled shoes and dress comfortably.

Book Discussion Groups meet on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 10:00 AM
and 7:30 PM. In May, the morning group will discuss The Kite Runner by
Khaled Hosseini and each member of the evening group will select a book that
was banned or one a group tried to ban – everyone has a list and will select
a book themselves.

Playreaders Group meets every third Tuesday at 2:00 PM in the Captain’s
Room. Everyone who attends has a script and is encouraged to participate.
Newcomers are always welcome. Call Barbara Clark for details at 455-2352.

A Watercolor Group will meet on Thursdays from 1:00-4:00 in the Captain’s
Room. This is a social, non-instructive painting group which is open to
anyone with an interest in watercolors. All levels of skill are welcome.
Bring your materials and paint with fellow artists. For further information,

Cocoa Beach Writers Workshops are held Thursdays at 10:00 AM in the
Captain’s Room. This round table discussion group gives authors the
opportunity to have their works read and critiqued by fellow writers. Anyone
interested in the craft of writing is welcome. Call Mary Burruss at 783-6997
