On the first Wednesday of every month, starting October 1st, Juice N Java Cafe in downtown Cocoa Beach will be sponsoring an Art Market from 3 to 8pm.  I will send out another email with a list of artists that will be displaying their works.  You'll see a wide variety of art, much of it will make for great gifts and with the holidays around the corner, you may as well get your lists in order.  There will be free tapas and refreshments.  Also available for purchase are wine and beer at the bar.  Juice n Java Cafe is located at 75 N Orlando.  For more information about these monthly events or to inquire about displaying your work, contact Pam Werneth at 321.784.3349.

Clay Handbuilding Workshop with Suzanne Frank, Thursdays, October 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30 from 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM. Cost is $70.00. Clay materials and tools provided, plus firing. Each student will be given clay and tools and will learn to make art objects using clay as a medium. Please register at the sign up table.


It’s All About the Water with Horticultural Agent Sally Scalera. Thursday, October 2nd at 10:00 AM in the Jane von Thron Room. Cost is $5.00. To register, please call the extension office at 633-1702. Learn what you can do in your landscape to conserve water and how you can help protect the Indian River Lagoon by using rain barrels. There are many things that can be done in landscapes that will reduce your water needs and help your plants grow healthier all at the same time.

On Saturday, October 4th from 7pm to 9pm at the Cocoa Beach Public Library, the Cocoa Beach Surf Museum hosts Movie Night with a showing of Dr. Diana's latest surf movie, Longboard Sessions, 2008.  Longboard Sessions 2008 is a surf video featuring local Cocoa Beach and Brevard County Surfers. The film is approximately one hour in length and includes many local longboarders riding from knee high waves to Hurricane Bertha four foot plus waves. The footage was shot at five different Brevard County surf spots from May 2008 through late August 2008. Diana Wehrell-Grabowski, aka "Dr. Diana" shot all the video footage as well as produced the film.   Sessions soundtrack is by the Aquanuts, a Cocoa Beach band consisting of the following members; Bob Grabowski on bass, Mark Grabowski on drums, Bill McMillen and Chuck Wofford on guitars. The Aquanuts, will play live surf music during the viewing of the film. Popcorn and beverages will be available for free.  For more information, go to  http://www.cocoabeachsurfmuseum.org The Paddleboard Committee of The Cocoa Beach Surf Museum will hold the second annual Causeway to Causeway (C2C) Challenge on Saturday, October 18th, at Lee Werner Park, located at 401 Riveredge Blvd in Cocoa.  This will again be a 22 mile non-trophy event, but we will track participants finish times. All paddlecraft are welcome to attend.  Sign-up will start at 7AM and we will start promptly at 8 AM. The entry fee is $15. Music on a Sunday Afternoon kicks off a new season with award winning folk song writer Sharon Osuna, Sunday, October 5th at 2:00 PM. Enjoy folk singing and acoustic guitar. Lots of country-folk-blues standards, and original songs featuring novel and humorous lyrics and fun Florida themes. Bring your sense of humor! Sharon took honors in the Best New Florida Song Contest held during last year’s Will McLean Festival.

iRest –Guided Deep Relaxation and Visualization Class with Emily Hain, Mondays, 6:30-7:30, Introductory evening on October 6th, classes will be on October 20, 27, November 3, 10, 17 & 24.  iRest has been used by the U.S. military as an adjunctive therapy for PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Emily has received advanced teacher training in this technique. Cost is $15.00 for the series of $3.00 drop-in.

 

Sally Hart, author of Who’s Talking, will host Meditation Time on Tuesdays, October 7,14, 21, 28 from 11:00 AM-1:00 PM in the Jane von Thron Room. Cost is $5.00 per session plus cost of materials. The former Lawrence Welk star will show you how you can use your family history to change your life for the better. Learn to:

  • Use guided meditations;
  • Design your own blessing beads to help you ‘focus’;
  • Create a 2008 personal ‘Treasure Map’ booklet;
  • Release all old perceptions and habits that are holding you back from what you desire to be.

Watercolor Classes with award winning watercolor artist Helen Wheatley, Tuesdays, 9:00 AM – noon, October 7th – December 2nd (No class on Veteran’s Day, November 11th). Suitable for Beginning and Intermediate students. Cost is $80.00 for the 8 week session. Register at the Sign Up table and pick up a materials list. Enrolment is limited. Helen’s Faces at the Oasis won best of show at the Central Brevard Art Association annual show in March 2007.

 

Part 2 of  Let’s Get in Order with Robert’s Rules with Parliamentarian Pete Cabaniss on October 7th at 7:00 PM. Pete Cabaniss will conduct part 2 of a seminar which will include a brief overview of parliamentary procedure from one who is schooled in the rules, procedures and governing documents of democratic assemblies. This program will be of interest to condominium owners and service groups in general.

Cocoa Beach Garden Club monthly meetings are held the second Wednesday of each month at Sponsler Hall, Cocoa Beach Community Church, 126 S. Atlantic Avenue. Meet & Greet begins at 9:30 am, followed by club meeting and program. For more information please call President Kay Farmer at 784-2296. Open Mic, Wednesday, October 8th from 6:00 – 8:30 PM. Perform music, either original or cover tunes, or recite original poetry or stories. Time is limited to 10 minutes per participant. Show up, sign up, and play! Part of a new Open Mic series which will take place every 2nd Wednesday.

 People in Print presents Ray Osborne, local historian and journalist, who will discuss his new book Cape Canaveral which is part of the Images of America series, show historic photographs and discuss the Native Americans who inhabited the area. For the seventh year, the Surfside Players will be presenting "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" in front of a full-size movie screen, with actors portraying the roles in front of the screen. 13th Annual Sea-Bean Symposium and Beachcombers’ Festival, Friday, October 17th (9:00 AM-5:00 PM) and Saturday, October 18th (9:00 AM-9:00 PM). Noted scientists, authors and enthusiasts of sea-beans and other drifting materials will be present for this 2-day event. Displays, slides, beach walks, contests and discussions will make this an interesting weekend. Keynote speaker will be Richard LaMonte, vice president of the North American Sea Glass Association, and author of the award-winning book Pure Sea Glass.

  • Bring your sea-beans and unidentified treasures to the experts.
  • See the famous Bean-O-Matic and help identify your sea-beans.
  • Win prizes at the Bean-A-Thon or in the Odd Bean Contest.

Ongoing Programs  

Ongoing:

 Pilates with Cory Huggins, Mondays at 9:00 AM, through December 1st.  Cost is $5.00 per session. Pilates is a series of stretching and strengthening exercises, which integrate the whole body and mind, which can result in the benefits of strengthened and toned muscles, as well as improved posture, flexibility and balance. Cory has taught Pilates for 3 years and group fitness for 5. Bring a mat and a water bottle. Participants should be in good health.

 Hatha Yoga for Seniors with Emily Hain, a Certified Yoga Instructor, on Tuesdays, 1:00-1:45 PM, through December 9th . No experience or special equipment is necessary; chairs will be used for support. Cost is $2.00 per class. Learn how yoga can help keep you more healthy and active. This 45 minute class is designed to warm up the body, improve your balance and maintain strength and flexibility in a relaxing and non-competitive style.

Easy Hatha Yoga with Emily Hain, Tuesdays at 2:00 PM, through December 9th.

Cost is $5.00 per session. This is a safe, fun, relaxing and non-competitive class. Bring a towel or a mat and wear comfortable clothing.

T’ai Chi Chu’an with John Lang A.P., Wednesdays at 9:00 AM, through November 26th. Cost is $5.00.  T’ai Chi is a unique system of moving meditation with exercise emphasizing legs and posture, and meditation of mind and breath. Wear comfortable clothing and flat soled shoes.

 Senior Fit Aerobics with personal trainer Polly Helm, Thursdays, through December 11th, 4:30-5:30 PM. An easy does it aerobics with a warm up and cool down 20 minutes long, featuring a chair based workout intended to tone the upper and lower body. Please bring a set of light weights, water and a towel. Cost is $5.00.

Intermediate Level Yoga with Rebecca Hirsch, Fridays, at 2:30 PM, through December 12th. Cost is $5.00. Focusing on breath, alignment, and attitude. Each pose will be offered with modifications to suit the level of experience of the participant. Bring a towel or mat and wear comfortable clothing.

Open Meeting with Commissioner Chuck Nelson, 4th Friday of every month 9:00-11:00 AM in the Captain’s Room. Come and speak to the Commissioner and share your views and concerns at these open meetings.

Playreaders Group meets, every third Tuesday at 2:00 PM in the Captain’s Room. Everyone who attends has a script and is encouraged to participate. Newcomers are always welcome. Contact Lois Palmer for details at 783-8645.

 Book Discussion Groups meet on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 10:00 AM and 7:30 PM in the Captain’s Room.  On October 8th, the morning group will discuss Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller. The evening group will review Losing Frank by Nancy Horan.

The Watercolor Group will  meet on Thursdays, from 1:00-4:00 PM in the Captain’s Room. This social, non-instructive painting group is open to anyone with an interest in watercolors.  All levels of skill are welcome. Bring your materials and paint with fellow artists.
