Vikings in North America, Wednesday, August 10th at 1:00 PM. An A & E Ancient Mysteries film (50 minutes in length). 500 years before the arrival of Christopher Columbus, the Vikings landed on the rugged North American Shores of present-day Canada and began building their settlement. The 1961 discovery suggests that the Vikings’ plan for conquest had been even more far-reaching than experts had originally thought. Yet evidence also suggests that the Norsemen’s stay on Newfoundland was so brief that if it wasn’t for the 1961 discovery by Norwegian explorers Helge Ingstad and Anne Stine, the settlement may have escaped history completely. What happened to these Viking explorers after their arrival in North America, and why did they leave? Refreshments will be served. |
