Role of Fire in Florida Ecology with Marine Biologist Tim Kozusko, Wednesday, January 5th at 6:30 PM. Tim Kozusko loved growing up in Cocoa Beach. His adventures exploring the Thousand Islands grew into more discovery of why things are the way they are. His love of reading helped him understand the history and geology of the area. As a biologist, Tim has done numerous plant and animal surveys. Tim Kozusko works at Kennedy Space Center and is working on his Ph.D. in Science Education at FIT. Tim's enthusiastic presentation, great visuals, and  dry sense of humor is always popular and brings a crowd, no matter how many times it’s been heard. Part of The Director’s Provocative Speakers Series.

Food for Life: Nutrition and Cooking Classes with Suzie Fricker, Saturdays, January 8, 15, 22 & 29 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. Cost is  $40.00 for the four week session, which is sponsored by The Cancer Project and Healthy Planet of Brevard. These classes will focus on key nutrition topics, live cooking demonstrations and plentiful samples of delicious meal ideas. Eat well, Live well.

Music on a Sunday Afternoon kicks off the new year with Acoustic Blues in the Library featuring  Sunnyland Steve, Sunday, January 9th at 2:00 PM. This versatile guitarist and comedian will give you a musical history of the amazing world of country blues and of the artists who developed this little known art form.

Art Journaling with Joan Throm, Mondays, January 10 & 24 at 10:00 AM in the Jane von Thron Room. $5.00 per session. Art journaling is a technique tapping into your inner child to express emotions. The technique consists of a non-dominant hand scribble, followed by using the dominant hand to color in areas, utilize simple designs and/or words to express one’s inner self. A fun process, and easy way to record response to day to day challenges and joy as well. This technique enables restoration of inner tranquility. The instructor is a doctoral student in pastoral counseling and a spiritual director. Cost is $5.00 to cover supplies. Please register at the sign up table for either session.

Watercolor Classes with award winning watercolor artist Helen Wheatley, Tuesdays, 9:00 AM – noon,  January 11th to March 1st.  Suitable for beginning and intermediate students. Cost is $80.00 for the 8 week session. Register at the sign up table and pick up a materials list. Enrolment is limited. Helen’s Faces at the Oasis won best of show at the Central Brevard Art Association annual show in March 2007.

Introduction to Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, with John Lang, A.P., Thursday, January 13th at 1:00 PM in the Jane von Thron Room. What is Acupuncture? How does it work? Does it hurt? Can it help me? A Florida licensed Acupuncture Physician will address these common questions and more, in a practical and down to earth manner. John Lang was a law clerk for the Texas Supreme Court and Ombudsman for the Smithsonian. He has been an Acupuncture Physician in Cape Canaveral since 1997 and teaches T’ai Chi here at Cocoa Beach Public Library. Part of The Director’s Provocative Speakers Series.

People in Print presents Karen Nolan, who will sign, sell and discuss her book Stolen Child: What Would You Do If the Government Stole Your Six Year Old Child?  Tuesday, January 11th at 6:30 PM in the Jane von Thron Room. Karen’s intention in the writing of her story is to help the countless other mothers who may be missing their child or dealing with an injustice of child abduction. Karen has been there and she came back with a different outlook on a system that is intended to help.

Mid-Day, Mid-Week Music featuring Susan Rose, Wednesday, January 19th at 1:00 PM. Bring a brown bag lunch. Punch and cookies will be provided. Susan Rose is a Singer Songwriter who resides in Cocoa Beach.  She has been writing and performing for over 15 years.  Susan won the "Peoples Choice Award" at the Cocoa Beach Singer-Songwriter Competition in 2009, inspiring her to go into the studio and record a CD: Susan Rose/Just A Girl.   Susan has played to audiences here in the United States and also in Central America and continues to enjoy meeting new listeners and friends.  Her music is easy to enjoy, as the stories they tell are the stories of all our lives.

Frankly Speaking with Marshall Frank, Wednesday, January 19th at 6:30 PM. “Violins to Violence”…growing up with the mob on track to Carnegie Hall, ending with a badge and a gun in Miami. Includes many stories about south Florida gangland, cops and symphonies.  Marshall Frank is an author, former homicide detective and a virtuoso violinist. Witt’s book chronicles the settlement of Cape Canaveral and tells the story of the Ais and the courageous people who came after. A must read for history buffs. Copies will be available for $25.00.

He will discuss, sign and sell copies of his fictional book, Bata the Bat-Ronaut, based on the story of Shuttle STS 119, which had a hitchhiking bat firmly grasping the tiles of the shuttle, causing much consternation at the launch site.
