According to Brevard County, the phosphorus and nitrogen present in fertilizers fuel the excessive growth of algae. This can smother natural vegetation, depleting oxygen and resulting in dead fish in the lagoon.
All properties in Cocoa Beach are connected to the lagoon in one way or another, even if they are not located directly on the water. Stormwater runoff and other yard debris contaminated with fertilizers that may wash off the lawn during rainstorms are extremely harmful to the lagoon.
Join the City of Cocoa Beach in our Be Floridian Now initiative to reduce fertilizer pollution to our waterways. Take the Fertilizer Pledge below!
